These are the brushes I currently use to paint all of my work in CSP, with a 12.9” iPad Pro.
- I start basically everything with the Sketch Round, for sketching, exploring, establishing the composition, and building basic forms.
- Once I’m happy with the setup of my illustration, I switch to either the Chalk, Oval or Painterly brush to render, depending on which I feel like using. Sometimes I render the whole piece with one brush, other times I’ll switch between them for certain tasks:
- The Chalk has harder edges, and tends to leave more distinct brush marks. It’s often useful for painting organic materials like stone, trees and plants.
- The Oval is similar to the Chalk, but with softer edges. I usually use it as a Chalk alternative, for when the Chalk is too hard.
- The Painterly brush can create streaky marks like a traditional paint brush, but when rendering with it can also create very tight, smooth details, similar to a pencil. It’s also my go to brush for painting things like grass, hair and fur.
- The Soft Round is just useful to have, for super soft gradients and things like that
I find that these brushes can cover basically everything I want to paint, as a fantasy artist.
That’s it! Happy painting.
